The Alternate Present Machine eBook Anthony Edwardson
While not overly impressed with the story, I was very impressed with the writing, and the concept. What makes me give this story a five star review, is because of what happened afterward. Doctor Baruf sounds like a typical carnie, hyping and selling the supernatural with his Alternate Present Machine. So I fully expected to have a let down at the end of the story. Our hero blogger, the skeptic completely expects the same result.Doctor Baruf promises that you will experience the alternate present in many dream experiences. That makes sense. I didn't want to put the book down. The night I finished the story, I went to sleep and had a mind-blowing dream. I pay attention to my dreams. Some of my dreams are allegorical, some are funny puns on my present, some are precognizant, and some seem real. I had a dream unlike any I have ever experienced. I was on a spaceship in a different universe, traveling with people I knew. It was in such vivid color and texture, that I knew there was some reality to it.
We live in times when things are no longer what they seem, and the impossible becomes possible simply by opening to the possibility. Mr. Edwards makes a powerful contribution in fiction form. I became a believer in Doctor Baruf's machine. You could too. It's fun and very helpful to turn paradigms upside down, you're never quite sure what will be the result.

The Alternate Present Machine eBook Anthony Edwardson Reviews
In this short sci-fi story, a skeptic blogger encounters a character in a Psychic Fair unlike the charlatans - but with an equally unbelievable machine. This machine is supposed to allow one to experience alternate versions of themselves on other timelines - sort of. And this machine need beta testers...
The protagonist is a convincing portrait of a blogger who ekes out a living ranting online about psychic fakes and their products. The Alternative Present machine's inventor is a likable teacher and thinker who's at the Psychic Fair because he's looking for gullible test subjects. And who has more reason to try it than a skeptic?
At times a bit self-referential and therefore somewhat opaque, the writing style is mostly transparent and enjoyable.
If you're a science fiction fan, I recommend that you check it out - it might give you a different slant on your own reality.
I went into reading this expecting to experience some of the alternate presents that the machine is to produce. While they are mentioned that is not the point of the story. While I understand the point of the story I found it has been done much better by Asimov.
In "The Alternate Present Machine", we meet Randy, Charlton, a blogger who chooses to expose people who claim to have any supernatural abilities. While attending a convention of tarot card readers and other such people, Randy comes across a scientist trying to recruit volunteers to test his alternative present machine. After a long discussion Randy agrees to try. This is where the story fails. There is very little exposure to the alternate present and is mainly a diatribe about belief. So while the writing is good the story is not.
Anthony Edwardson writes a short story about a skeptical blogger who visits a psychic fair and meets a mad scientist, Dr. Beruf, who somehow convinces him to try his "Alternative Present" machine (a kind of alternative reality machine). Despite initially writing him off as a charlatan, strange things start to happen after that ...
I found the story very thought-provoking, although I feel that the ideas could have been developed more - I was left wanting more at the end. Nevertheless, I found it an interesting read and would definitely recommend it to anyone who is interesting in exploring the possibility of different realities.
